What Is Louisiana-Style Remoulade Sauce

If you like to dunk, dip or drizzle, then remoulade is definitely your thing! With roots in Europe, remoulade (reh-moo-lahd) made it’s way across the Atlantic a long time ago and found a very welcome home in the coastal south.

RELATED RECIPE: Tasty Homemade Tartar Sauce

In my home state, Louisiana-style remoulade sauce is a creamy, tartar sauce-like sauce made with mayonnaise, whole grain mustard, horseradish, lemon and just the right amount of spices and dried herbs for loads of bright, inviting flavor. It’s just a little tart, just a little spicy and can always be found happily perched on a platter of deep-fried seafood or fish.

9 Things to Eat With Remoulade Sauce

Even though Louisiana Remoulade Sauce is usually served with fried seafood or fish dishes, (especially crab cakes), that’s not all it’s good with. Here are 11 delicious foods that only get better with a little remoulade. But I bet you can come up with more!

  • Spicy Creole Shrimp Foil Packets
  • Easy Southern Salmon Patties
  • Juicy Lucy Broiler Burgers
  • Garlic Parmesan Sweet Potato Wedges
  • Crab Cake Sliders
  • Louisiana Fish Fry
  • Fried Green Tomatoes
  • Fried Squash & Zucchini
  • Po’ Boy Sandwiches
  • French Fries & Kettle Chips

Ingredients for Louisiana Remoulade

Because remoulade has been around for a long time, you can imagine there are a myriad of versions to be made and enjoyed! Almost every southern region has it’s own way of whipping up this classic sauce. Below are the ingredients for the creamy, tangy version we like best.

  • real mayonnaise
  • whole grain mustard (or creole mustard)
  • prepared horseradish
  • ketchup
  • lemon juice
  • dried parsley
  • dried snipped chives
  • minced garlic
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • all purpose creole seasoning (or cajun seasoning)
  • sugar (optional)

How to Make This Homemade Remoulade Sauce Recipe

Gather Ingredients & Mix. This one step recipe is as simple as putting everything in a bowl and whisking until smooth. That’s it!

Serve or Chill. When sufficiently whisked, it can either be served immediately or covered and chilled for at least one hour for extra flavor. This makes remoulade one of those special dinner or party touches that can be made ahead of time.

How to Store. If there is any remoulade leftover (which is almost unheard of), it can be covered and stored in the fridge for at least a week or a week and a half.

Want an extra kick? Add a splash or two of Louisiana Hot Sauce (to suit your taste) or a pinch of cayenne pepper. (The creole seasoning linked in this recipe contains common remoulade ingredients like salt, paprika, cayenne and black peppers already mixed in.)

Great quick & easy super tangy flavourful dipping sauce. . I spread some on my BLT right after I blended it up – great. I can not hardly wait to see what else gets “dipped.”

Looks fabulous. I’m a New Orleans native and this is right on! I’m thinking of using this as a salad dressing. Have you ever done that? Would you thin it out a bit with some oil and vinegar?

Hi, Adele! Thank you so much! This makes my day! I haven’t tried it as a salad dressing, but I think that’s a great idea! Maybe a little pickle juice?? If you try it, let me know!
