Unit Studies, also called Cross Curriculum, uses a specific area of interest as a springboard to study in all major subject areas (Math, Language Arts, History, Science).
Example: Civil War- All lessons would center around/have a Civil War theme. Math would have students calculating soldiers, artillery, etc.; spelling words and vocabulary would be centered around battle terms; reading could range from biographies of Harriet Tubman to Stephen Crane’s classic Red Badge of Courage, and so on.
This practice can be a favorite of large families with children of varying ages because a unit can be modified to meet different needs, levelsm and capabilities with the benefit of focusing preparation and planning.
Unit Studies works well with philosophies that hold to the belief that students learn more when they are fully immersed and engaged in a subject.
